Team Resource Management Instructor Course (TRM)

Most of us working within the field of medical simulation will over the years have through trial and error (we call it careful testing) come up with a template for instilling Team Resource Management instruction within our health care teams. This is generally derived from the forefathers of simulation such as Gaba and is for a greater part derived from Aviation's TRM the form of human factors training that is used to ensure that should the worst happen the flight crew will be able to deal with it safely and systematically with as little human error as possible.

Now Health care has the opportunity to benefit directly from aviation's lead in the for a new course from Global Aviation in Cheshire. Global air training are an innovative training company that specialises in Human factors and TRM training courses for both Aviation and healthcare. I recently attended there TRM Instructors course a five day course that at the end of an extremely rewarding and informative 5 days you will be rewarded with an instructors certification that you can then use to train others within your own centre.

The course itself is of excellent educational quality with a combination of theoretical lectures, case studies and problem based learning. The course is assessed through the use of presentations and a final exam, but it is the combination of instructors from aviation and healthcare that really sets this course apart form the rest.

I can fully recommend this course to anyone who undertakes a human factors approach to de-briefing as part of there simulation course. Patient safety and error reduction should be top of all centres priorities and this course provides the building blocks to enable you to integrate TRM into your centres activities.
